Home Modifications and Adjustments – What You Need to Know
As we get older, even small changes around the home can make a big difference to safety, comfort and independence.
Under the Support at Home program, older Australians can now access home modifications and adjustments through a dedicated funding pathway — helping you stay safe, confident and independent in your own home for longer
At Eremea, we’re here to guide you through what’s available and how it works.
What are Home Modifications and Adjustments?
Home modifications are practical changes to your home that improve safety, mobility and access. These changes are not cosmetic — they must directly support your care needs and daily living.
Examples may include:
- Grab rails in bathrooms or toilets
- Internal or external handrails
- Ramps or small access changes
- Shower adjustments or hob reductions
- Widened doorways for mobility aids
- Nonslip flooring in highrisk areas
These changes can significantly reduce falls risk and make everyday tasks easier and safer
How is this funded under Support at Home?
Under Support at Home, home modifications are funded separately from your regular care services such as cleaning or personal care. This means:
- You don’t need to save up your care budget
- Funding is provided upfront, based on your assessed needs
- You may be approved for home modifications only, or alongside assistive
technology
Funding is provided through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (ATHM) Scheme, which supports older people to remain living safely at home.
Do I need an assessment?
Yes. Home modifications must be:
- Linked to your care needs
- Recommended or prescribed by an appropriately qualified health professional (such as an Occupational Therapist)
- Approved through your Support at Home assessment
Eremea works closely with clinicians and assessors to make sure recommendations are appropriate, compliant and focused on your safety and independence.
